If You Want Something Done Right, Do it with Chandeliers

While the housing market might have slumped low in recent years, those who do own homes have shown a much higher interest in making them beautiful.  With the success of such shows as “Flip This House” and “This Old House”, it’s no surprise that those watching the shows would want to try some of the designs that they see in their own homes.  However for all those amateur interior decorators out there, there are some very simple things that should always be kept at the forefront whenever revamping your home décor. One of these things is installing elegant modern chandeliers.

First and foremost, you don’t need to have some fancy degree to know how to design your home, after all, it’s yours!  That’s the first thing to keep in mind.  Just because something might be of a classical design, that doesn’t mean that you’ll like it, so design things the way you want to.  After all, if you have to live in the house, you might as well like what you’ve done with it.  When choosing major furniture piece, which are the broad strokes of your home design, choose those that you like, and those which will work well together.  Once that’s been done, it’s time to get down to the nitty gritty of pulling together the broad strokes, and making a complete painting out of your home.

When settling on interior designs, usually each room has its own feel to it, even if the house doesn’t have a single design strategy flowing through it.  And within each room there’s usually a single piece which is meant to be the center focus of the design, whether it’s a sofa, mantle piece, or light display there will be something for guests to see and comment on in every room.  For those designers who are intrigued by the last design idea, one of the best centerpieces that can be used with a light display is a chandelier.

The word chandelier may conjure up images of fancy ball rooms, or even scenes from plays like Phantom of the Opera, but just because some of them are grand and expensive doesn’t mean that all of them are.  A chandelier, like any other interesting lighting display, can add a touch of class or taste to any room that it’s in.  However, a chandelier can be put into quite nearly any room that a designer might deem appropriate.  Or in some cases inappropriate, if what they’re looking for is something unexpected and surprising.

For instance, everyone expects to see a crystal chandelier in the foyer, or even above the dining room table.  The image is a classic one, but it never seems to lose its charm because of that.  However, that doesn’t mean that one shouldn’t put a chandelier in the kitchen.  The style though should be different than the crystal lighting that would be found in the foyer.  Kitchens must be well lighted, and the design should be pulled together by its lighting.  For instance, classic dark wood cabinets and floor with a wrought iron chandelier in a subdued design.  Little touches like that can add something to almost any room.

To bring the point just a little bit closer to home though, envision a master bedroom.  There’s typically a good deal of space, which means that design options aren’t as limited as other rooms might be.  And the added bonus, since the bedroom is not a place that company traditionally comes to admire, you as the designer can feel completely unconstrained in what you do with it.  With a higher ceiling, a chandelier might be one of the best lighting options for a bedroom.  Particularly so if the room has an already classic look to it, whether that classic look is Victorian, 1920’s, or even a re-invented Middle Ages.

One last thing to consider when thinking about your choice of lighting piece for a room.  As was mentioned above, kitchens should be well lighted.  Typically a bedroom, or even a master bath, should be dimly lighted.  Rooms such as the dining room and any other rooms where entertainment will be hosted may have different moods that could all be accomplished with different lighting.  Most often, a chandelier come with a light dial, which gives you as the homeowner and designer the ability to dim or brighten a room as the occasion calls for it.  But just remember, it’s your house.  That means that it’s your rules, and as long as the design works for you, then go with it.
